Royal Botanic Gardens

Regarded as Scotland’s premier garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The garden, which was first opened in 1670 as a small physic (medicinal) garden near Holyrood House, was designed by two doctors, Andrew Balfour and Robert Sibbald. It was moved to its present location at Inverleith during the 1820s and expanded to cover an area of 31 hectares (78 acres). Today, the garden contains a unique collection of plants and is home to over 15,500 species from around the world, housed in the world-famous Rock Garden, the Chinese Hillside and the Glasshouse Experience. Visitors can also see the Woodland Gardens & Arboretum and the Winter Garden, as well as enjoy spectacular views across the city of Edinburgh.
The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh is an internationally renowned scientific centre dedicated to the study and conservation of plants.
